Maui Crafts Guild

One of the Island's only artist cooperatives, Maui Crafts Guild is crammed with treasures. Resident artists produce lead-glazed pottery, basketry, glass and feather art, photography, ceramics, and woodwork pieces. The prices are surprisingly low, making this a great place to find gifts and one-of-a-kind items to take home.

Maui Friends of the Library

This nonprofit bookstore is run by volunteers who are happy to let you spend a few minutes (or hours) browsing shelves filled with mystery, sci-fi, fiction, military history, and "oddball" volumes. There's a nice section reserved for new Hawaiiana books. If you've finished with your vacation reading, donate it to benefit the Island's public libraries. There are also locations at Queen Kaahumanu Center and behind the former Puunene School in Kahului.

Azeka Shopping Center

Spread across two complexes on either side of South Kihei Road, this no-frills shopping center is in the heart of Kihei. The mall is comprised of more than 50 stores, including a scuba shop for rentals and dive bookings, a gas station, several great takeout and dine-in restaurants, a coffee shop, and a post office. Ample free parking makes this an easy stop to fulfill your basic needs.

Biasa Rose

The whole family can shop for stylish threads at this boutique. Charming items—including upcycled items, Hawaii-made products, pillows, shoes, and earth-friendly bags—are on display along with comfy cotton tees, airy tunics, and statement necklaces. The store has a great menswear selection that includes vintage aloha shirts. Repurposed kids' clothing and home accessories are locally made. At Rose's Closet, the women's consignment shop in the back, you can score designer pieces at great prices.

This large supermarket combines the best of gourmet selections and local products with all the familiar staples you need to stock your vacation kitchen. It also makes an excellent poke (diced raw fish).

Ha Wahine

At this women's clothing store, statement Polynesian prints are redefined in vibrantly colored blouses, pareos (beach wraps), dresses, and aloha shirts. All clothing is designed and made locally, as is most of the jewelry.

Haiku Marketplace at the Cannery

This assortment of stores (including a small grocery store and a hardware store), service providers, a post office, and various businesses make up the hub of this small town. The big draw, besides enjoying a nice stroll through the area, are two of the island's most popular restaurants, Colleen's at the Cannery and Nuka.

Hale Zen

If you're shopping for gifts in West Maui, don't miss this store packed with beautiful island-inspired pieces for the home. Most of the teak furniture and home accessories are imported from Bali, but local purveyors supply the inventory of clothing, jewelry, beauty products, kitchenware, and food.

Hasegawa General Store

Be sure to stop at Hana's charming, filled-to-the-rafters, one-stop shopping option. Built in 1910, the Hana institution isn't fancy, but it's one of Maui's oldest family-run businesses. Buy fishing tackle, beach towels, and a decent selection of groceries here. You also can buy the newspaper, although it may not always be delivered on time. Check out the bulletin board for local events.

Hilo Hattie

Hawaii's largest manufacturer of aloha shirts also carries brightly colored blouses, skirts, and children's clothing. You can pick up many trinkets and gifts here, but be aware that many are not made locally.

Honolua Store

In contrast to Kapalua's many high-end retailers, the old Honolua Store still plies the groceries and household goods it did in plantation times. Hefty plates of ono (delicious) local foods are served at the deli until 3 pm and best enjoyed on the wraparound porch. The plate lunches are the quintessential local meal. The coffee bar is welcoming and includes air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi daily until 5 pm.

Honolua Surf Company

If you're in the market for colorful print shirts and sundresses, check out this surf shop. It's popular with young women and men for surf trunks, casual clothing, and accessories. There are two locations on Front Street, plus branches in Whalers Village, The Shops at Wailea, and Paia.

Hot Island Glass

With furnaces glowing bright orange and loads of mesmerizing sculptures on display, this glassworks is an exciting place to visit. The studio, set back from Makawao's main street in a little courtyard, is owned by a family of glassblowers. Open daily 9-5 pm. Call ahead for times the artists will be creating their masterpieces.

Kihei Kalama Village

Encompassing more than 40 specialty shops and restaurants, this area known as "the Triangle" attracts visitors and locals alike. In addition to the brick-and-mortar establishments, there are shaded outdoor stalls selling everything from printed and hand-painted T-shirts and sundresses to jewelry, pottery, wood carvings, fruit, and gaudily painted coconut husks—some, but not all, made by local craftspeople.

Lahaina Cannery Mall

This mall, housed inside an old pineapple cannery, hosts free events year-round including Hawaiian crafts, hula lessons, and a weekly hula show on Sundays. Stop at Na Hoku, a purveyor of striking Hawaiian heirloom-quality jewelry and pearls. Whether you're searching for surf and skate threads or tropical resort wear, Crazy Shirts, Hawaiian Island Creations, Serendipity, and other retailers give you ample selections, and Banana Wind carries ocean-inspired home decor.
