Restaurants in Bavaria run the gamut from the casual and gemütlich (cozy) Gasthof to formal gourmet offerings. More upscale establishments try to maintain a feeling of casual familiarity, but you will probably feel more comfortable at the truly upscale restaurants if you dress up a bit. Note that many restaurants take a break between 2:30 and 6 pm. If you want to eat during these hours, look for the magic words Durchgehend warme Küche, indicating warm food is served throughout the day, possibly snacks during the off-hours. Most restaurants in the region don't accept credit cards.
One of the best restaurants in town is known for its innovative Bavarian cuisine based on regionally sourced seasonal ingredients. Young chef Steffi Bauer changes the short but appealing menu, which features local fish, meat, and veggie dishes, about every two months and also offers a daily special.
A lively brewery with charming beamed ceilings located inside the Hotel Maximilian, this is an upscale meeting place for locally sourced Bavarian specialties. Dishes change on a weekly basis and include wild game in season.
In a classic wood-paneled 19th-century inn with lovely painted ceilings, the friendly international staff serves up hearty portions of typical Bavarian food like grilled duck with potato dumplings and red cabbage, and Wiener schnitzel. There’s also a decent selection of vegetarian and even vegan items, rare for this meat-loving region.
Although everything is modern, this inn in Bad Wiessee takes you back to a less frantic era. Classical music accompanies unpretentious yet tasty meals.
