The ancient town of Remagen still bears traces of its Roman and medieval past, but in modern times the town's fame stems from its role in WWII, when the allies stormed across its famous bridge penetrating Germany's western front and hastening Hitler's fall. Although the bridge no longer stands, the Friedensmuseum (Peace Museum), in one of its foreboding black-basalt towers, pays tribute. Remagen's historic old town offers fascinating vestiges of the town's past.
