This small but bustling town, at the confluence of the rivers Derwent and Cocker, has colorful buildings, history, and narrow streets that are a delight to wander. The ruined 13th-century castle is open only on special occasions. Over a weekend in September the town holds the Taste Cumbria Food Festival.
