A 45-minute drive from Amman, through the lovely hills of Gilead, which are dotted with sheep, goats, and large boulders, will get you to site of Jerash, one of the most complete remains of a provincial Roman city in existence. Jerash was buried under sand and rubble for centuries, until 1806, when a German traveler discovered the site, although excavations were not begun until 1925.
April and May are the best times to explore Jerash, when hills are covered in bright green and wild flowers, set against blue skies. The site of the ruined city is quite large and you could spend three hours exploring, seeing the chariot experience, and visiting the museum.
